Q.1.1 PowerPoint presentation (POE)
Firstly we have Digital Divide which is defined as “the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don’t or have restricted access” (Rouse. M 2014) .
Digital divide impacts on social capital in 6 noteworthy ways, namely:
The Digital Divide – a Socio-economic Divide This element deals with access to technology or digital platforms due to socio-economic factors, poverty, political instability etc..
The Digital Divide – a Divide in Infrastructure This element can be explained by making distinctions between developed and developing countries, that is to say that there is less infrastructure in developing or underdeveloped countries therefore there will automatically be a digital divide present.
The Digital Divide – a Divide in Content According to Dutton (2004), nearly 70% of websites are in English. What this means is that individuals who do not speak the language will find significant difficulty with interacting with the internet or online digital platforms.
The Digital Divide – a Gender Divide In developing countries there is a significant divide between males and females who have access to and utilize the internet, in such countries, males have more access to the technology while the women follow slowly behind, and this hinders gender equality.
The Digital Divide – a Skills Divide In current times it is imperative to be digitally literate, having the skills to operate a computer is probably the biggest opportunity, or hindrance, to the adoption, or not, of technology for development.
The Digital Divide – the Universal Access Divide Another issue pertaining to digital access is that of those who are physically disadvantaged. Although technology is advancing at a faster pace than it ever has, it still leaves those individuals who are physically disabled at a grate disadvantage.
